GOW GEES RECIPE

This recipe will teach you how to make Gow Gees. It is a quick and easy recipe to make. These Gow Gees are a wonderful appetizer to have before your main asian style meal. The flavours of the pork , prawns, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, green ginger, sherry, soy sauce, shallots and garlic in the Gow Gees make them taste absolutely fantastic.

Gow Gees Ingredients

6 shallots
1 clove garlic
1 Tbs dry sherry
1 Tbs soy sauce
2 tsp sesame oil
oil for deep frying
250g minced pork
125g green prawns
115g bamboo shoots
60g dried mushrooms
250g wonton wrappers
1 tsp grated green ginger

Sweet and Sour Sauce:
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tbs cornflour
2 Tbs tomato paste
1 Tbs tomato sauce
1/4 cup extra water
1/2 cup white vinegar

Gow Gees Method

Sauce: Combine sugar, water, vinegar, tomato paste and tomato sauce in a saucepan and stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. With the extra water add the cornflour and make a smooth paste and add to saucepan. Stir continually over medium heat until sauce thickens then reduce heat and simmer for 1 minute.

Cut the wonton wrappers using an 8cm round cutter and stack wonton wrappers on top of each other and that way you can cut a lot in one go. With boiling water cover the mushrooms and let stand for 30 minutes then drain and chop the mushrooms finely. Mix together the mushrooms, pork, shelled and finely cut prawns, finely chopped bamboo shoots, ginger, crushed garlic, sesame oil, soy sauce and sherry and combine well. Place small amounts of mixture into the centre of each circle and brush the edges of wrappers with water and fold in half and then pinch the edges together firmly. Drop the Gow Gees into deep hot oil and fry till golden brown then remove and drain on absorbent paper. Serve the Gow Gees with sauce for dipping.

Enjoy your freshly made Gow Gees!
